Every time I re-read this book, I see the symptoms of his love for her earlier and earlier; this time around, I could see it even in their very first dialogue, after Miss Taylor’s wedding.

As a young, pretty girl who jumped into a short-lived engagement with a dashing young soldier, it has been suggested that Mary Pearson may have provided inspiration for the character of Lydia in Pride and Prejudice. She began writing the novel in October 1796 after visiting her brother Edward and his wife Elizabeth in Kent. Smith is a minister, and her Austen Series are modern adaptations of Jane Austen’s novels, each with a religious message.
